Romeo must die (4 Stars)

Two gangs divide the waterfront area of Oakland, California between themselves in an uneasy truce. One gang is black, the other is Chinese. The truce breaks down when a wealthy corporation wants to buy the waterfront to build a new football stadium. The violence escalates when the son of the Chinese boss is found murdered. Jet Li plays Han, the older brother of the murdered son, fresh from Hong Kong seeking revenge. But as soon as he arrives in America he has a chance meeting with the daughter of the other gang's boss, played by Aaliyah, and they fall in love.

Although full of martial arts fighting and modern rap music, the film has a cheesy 80's Blaxploitation feeling. The plot is predictable, no big surprises, but the film is still exciting and has an uplifting romantic message about the success of love against overwhelming odds. It's an enjoyable film to watch, though probably not more than once.
